Liberalism: The National Illness

Something is seriously out of whack in this country and it concerns me greatly. For the past several decades we have been slouching towards becoming a nation where many of the people are without high standards or common sense. The political goals and values of so many in this country are so out of line with the vision of the Founding Fathers that I fear this nation as we know it may not survive. Many of these people are out of touch with reality and one would think an illness, like a vicious virus, has taken hold of their brains. Sadly, the rest of the nation suffers from the effects of this illness like the spread of a plague because these brain-damaged people both vote and hold public office.

I got to thinking about this issue in November when General Paul Tibbets passed away. For those of you not up on your history, General Tibbets was the pilot of the Enola Gay, the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb, “Little Boy,” on Hiroshima Japan. General Tibbets’ death got wide coverage in the press and I was saddened to read that in the past few decades he had been so harassed by the anti-war left that he decided he would not have a funeral or a proper grave with marker. He was concerned the funeral would draw protestors and that the grave would be vandalized, becoming a rallying point for anti-military poltroons in our country. It is sad this great man had to fret over such things in the last years of his life. It used to be that we raised statues to honor and celebrate our military heroes. Now we see many on the left degrade and openly attack them. You certainly don’t see conservative Republicans doing this and I can guarantee it was not Republicans that General Tibbets worried would desecrate his grave.

If one wishes to see other symptoms of this national illness on full display, a great place to do so is by watching the Democratic presidential contenders debate one another. While watching one of the recent Democrat debates I observed some very disturbing things. As the Democrats painted a picture of the America they envisioned, I shuddered as they spoke; it looked nothing like the America painted by the Founders. What they desire is socialism, big government and control over our lives. They clearly had no respect for personal property rights and it made me ill to even think about the chances they will have to enact their vision if they win the White House next November—assuming the Congress remains in Democrat hands. Approval of their Marxist vision by their minions was even being quantified with science. Pollster Frank Luntz was doing one of his “Luntzometer” studies during the debate. With the Luntzometer you crank a dial up or down to show approval or disapproval as an issue is being discussed. When the subject of Barak Obama’s past use of cocaine came up, there was an interesting reaction among the Democrat study group using the dials. Luntz asked the group of Democratic voters how they felt about this subject coming up. Many thought it was a cheap smear and did not think Obama’s past drug use was a big issue. When asked for a show of hands on the subject’s importance, all raised their hands to say they thought it did not matter that Obama had used drugs. Stunning? Sadly, no it is not. I would not be surprised if this group probably had been users of illegal drugs in their own lives from the way they reacted. As I said before, these are brain-damaged people—which helps explain why they are liberals.

The Democrats have, for some time, shown us they have no moral standards. Look at how they all rallied around Bill Clinton during all of his various scandals in the 90s. Anything, any corrupt or degenerate act, seemed to be acceptable as long as someone of their “ideology” held power. An interesting contrast to this is how the study concerning the use of steroids or human growth hormone by baseball players came out in mid-December, mere days after this Democratic debate. The media immediately began to wring their hands and wail about how these pillars of our society, these role models for our children, had failed them by using these drugs to enhance performance. I sat shaking my head. How does it not faze them at all that a top presidential contender admits in his own book that he had a past problem with drugs, yet he is still perfectly acceptable as a possible President of the United States? What sort of role model is that? Past felonies are acceptable if you are a liberal, it seems.

Common sense is a rare thing on the left. Watching the debate, the other things that seemed to resound well with the Democrats hooked to the “Luntzometer” was attacks on our military, corporate America and capitalism. They also loved it when we were blamed for “global climate change” (note they don’t call it “Global Warming” anymore as that has been debunked for the idiotic fairy tale it is). This group, like many Democrats, loves the idea of socialized medicine. Never mind that the news abounds with horror stories of people from nations with socialized medicine fleeing to the United States to get the treatment that will save their lives. You see, in the nations with socialized medicine, if you are retired and no longer paying taxes into the system that keeps that beast alive, you are not viewed as valuable to that society; in fact you are viewed as a parasite, part of the surplus population that they need to get rid of.  Since we are in the Christmas season I hope you will forgive me as I paraphrase Scrooge from Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol: The “badly off” should be left to die and “decrease the surplus population.” But if folks want to see the real Scrooge, wait until you need the government to fork over money for your medical treatment after the age of retirement. They would sooner see you die to free up the funds to treat someone who will continue to fuel the beast with income tax dollars.

All these misguided souls who have been sold on the theory of socialized medicine, and who will not research the nightmare that it is, will aid in the undoing of the greatest medical system in the world. They think they will be getting the ultimate free lunch. In reality they will shorten their own lives in years and quality by this action. Our nation’s pharmaceutical companies develop the drugs that cure diseases. They improve and prolong the lives for those who have incurable maladies. Many ailments that once claimed millions of lives a year have been cured by the research and study of America’s pharmaceutical and research facilities. When we listen to the UN scream about how not enough is being done to treat or cure AIDS in Africa or South America, who do they turn to blame that not enough is done: The United States, of course. Why? Because the rest of the world, having embraced socialized medicine, has killed their research and development of drugs that cure disease. Also, by making doctors miserable government employees, getting the best and brightest into the field of medicine in those nations is a thing of the past. The rest of the world would do well to stop demanding we do more for them and start emulating us.

Nevertheless, there are those misguided fools in the U.S. that want to make us more like those failed societies who blame us for everything. These people are easily led, as they are not deep thinkers. They prefer to feel their way through an issue, not think about it. That would be too hard for them. Moreover, this can be blamed on so many factors that I could write an entire column on that subject alone. To make it more manageable let us look at one factor: the damage done by the public schools in turning our children into little socialists.

Our public schools indoctrinate these types of people early on in childhood to embrace this “Nanny-state” mentality. How so, you ask? From the very beginning when the teachers give you the list of what supplies you will need, you learn that you don’t keep what you bring. The instructor will pull all the pencils, paper, erasers, glue, etc, into a community box to use. By doing this the children are taught the collective mindset. Never mind bringing in something of quality to use, you have to share it and won’t have it yourself. You wind up sharing the shoddy tools this sort of mindset engenders. For instance you won’t bring good Kleenex brand tissues for yourself, as they will be confiscated. So you bring generic brand tissue that leaves the nose red and sore with the first use. Bring good quality Faber pencils? Forget it. Use the cheap and cheesy #2 Pencil from Chairman Mao brand pencils made by slave labor in China, as you will never see that Faber again. Quality will stink, but the basic need is covered, miserable as it may be. That is what the child is taught by this exercise. So it will be with many things in the public schools from then on forward to graduation.

Collectivism, or socialism, kills all incentive for quality or initiative. Read Rush Limbaugh’s story of the first Thanksgiving if you want to see the first failure of Socialism on these shores, centuries before Marx or Engels ever penned their various works on the subject.

History proves it time and time again: socialized anything fails.

While on the subject of practices in the public schools that irritate me to no end, I must touch on “zero tolerance.” I must protest these moronic “zero tolerance” policies since I view “zero tolerance” as equaling “zero intelligence.” It leaves no room for common sense; something the left lacks anyways so I guess it makes it easier for them, but bewildering to the rest of us that have it. To underline my point, I just heard of yet another story where a child was expelled for having brought a knife to school she needed for eating her lunch.

A teacher who saw a ten-year-old child cutting the steak she brought from home with a kitchen knife started a panic and the child was arrested! Folks, please; this is insane. Every week we hear about some child expelled for talking about guns or going hunting, drawing a gun, for bringing a small knife or nail clippers, it goes on and on. It is bizarre and silly that in this country founded by brave pioneers crossing the sea to conquer the mountains, hills and open plains with their rifles, shotguns and, yes, knives, that we have somehow evolved into a nation afraid of a stick. My generation carried our Cub Scout knives to school; we would be expelled for that today and that’s totally nuts!

Nevertheless, we have become a nation full of nuts and they are running things, it seems. For far too long we have tolerated this early indoctrination of children in the public schools and now we reap what these policies have sown. We are not only the “Nanny State,” we are fast becoming the “Ninny State.” That which was once held up as the American ideal is now rejected and ridiculed as wrong, and what was considered perverse and abhorrent is held up as the new national norm and the rest of us have to accept it or we are bigots.

My friends, each of us needs to do our part to stop this national slide towards socialism and the political Sodom and Gomorrah to which the Democrats want to lead us. We can stop it. But it will take each and every one of us getting out and voting, not just in November, but also in the primaries. We must do our part in selecting the right people to run for public office in our Party. Too many times a pretender of conservatism rises to the top: Bob Taft and Mike DeWine quickly come to mind. We must root out the pretenders and find the candidates who will serve their constituents and stand up against the liberal slide towards socialism and a society without standards or decency. We must stop this slide and reverse it. We must take note of what is going on in the public schools. Talk to your children and find out what is going on in those classes. If you find the same idiocy I did, yank your kid out of those schools and put them in a private school where you have more control. The nation can be saved, but not without you.

May God bless and be with all of you in the coming year.
